What Exactly Is Desmos?

Desmos is a free, browser-based graphing calculator widely used in high school math classrooms. On the Digital SAT, the College Board has embedded the Desmos calculator directly into the Bluebook testing app.

It is available on both Math modules, meaning you have calculator access for every question — not just selected ones, as on the old paper-based SAT. The embedded Desmos actually offers two modes: a graphing calculator and a scientific calculator. Students can toggle between the two depending on what the question calls for.

The interface is clean, responsive, and more capable than most handheld calculators students are used to. It can graph equations, identify intersections, evaluate expressions, and more.


5 Smart Ways to Use Desmos on the Digital SAT

1. Graph equations to find solutions visually. Many algebra problems that require multiple steps can be solved quickly by graphing. If a question asks for the solution to a system of equations, enter both equations into Desmos and click on the intersection point. The coordinates appear instantly, reducing the risk of arithmetic errors.

2. Use it to check your work. Even if you solve a problem by hand, Desmos is an excellent verification tool. Enter your answer, graph it, and confirm that it makes sense. Catching a small mistake can make a big difference on a timed test.

3. Solve quadratic and polynomial equations without factoring. If factoring feels difficult under time pressure, graph the equation instead. The x-intercepts of the graph represent the roots. Desmos will show exactly where the graph crosses the x-axis.

4. Evaluate functions quickly. If a question defines f(x) and asks for f(3), you can enter the function into Desmos and evaluate it directly. This is especially helpful for piecewise functions or complex expressions.

5. Visualize word problems involving relationships. Desmos can also help with word problems. For example, graphing a linear model for distance over time can make the relationship between variables clearer and help you identify the correct answer more efficiently.

What Desmos Cannot Do for You

It’s important to stay realistic. Desmos is a calculator — not a problem-solver. It will not interpret a question, determine what is being asked, or set up equations for you.

Students who rely entirely on the calculator without strong foundational skills will likely struggle. Desmos works best when you already understand the underlying concepts.

It also requires familiarity with proper inputs. If you are unsure how to enter absolute value functions, inequalities, or other expressions, you may lose valuable time during the test.

Practice With Desmos Before Test Day

Knowing Desmos is available on the Digital SAT is one thing. Walking in on Test Day fully fluent in it is another — and that difference can absolutely show up in your score.

Work on graphing the function types that appear most frequently on the Digital SAT — linear, quadratic, exponential, and absolute value equations.
